Why it’s best to put roses in pots

Planting Roses in Pots in Late Summer: Why It Works Best in Perth

In Perth’s hot, dry late summer, roses face some of the toughest conditions of the year. For JGS Roses gardeners, one of the most common questions is whether it’s better to put roses into pots now, or to focus on taking cuttings or doing grafting work. At this time of year in Western Australia, growing or holding roses in pots is usually the safest and most reliable option.

Perth’s climate brings very hot days, intense sun and drying winds, which make it difficult to keep cuttings consistently cool and moist enough to form roots. The predominantly sandy soils in many Perth gardens drain quickly and don’t hold water or nutrients well, so unrooted cuttings or freshly grafted material are much more likely to dry out or stall before they have a chance to establish. When the heat is at its peak, even a short lapse in watering can be enough to set new material back badly.
