Transplanting Roses

The best time to transplant roses in Perth is during the cool winter months, when the plants are dormant and not actively growing. This minimises stress, helps roots re‑establish, and sets roses up for strong spring growth.

Ideal months in Perth

In Perth’s Mediterranean climate, the prime window for moving established roses is June, July and August, with July usually offering the coldest, most stable conditions. During this dormant period, roses have slowed right down, so they cope much better with root disturbance and hard pruning.

Because winter days are cooler and soil stays moist for longer, transplanted roses can quietly rebuild their root systems before facing Perth’s hot dry summer. This timing also aligns neatly with the main winter pruning season, so gardeners can combine pruning and transplanting in one visit.

Why Winter matters

Transplanting while roses are dormant reduces the risk of transplant shock, wilting and dying back, especially in older bushes. With no flowers to support and minimal foliage, the plant can focus its energy on healing damaged roots and exploring its new patch of soil.

Moving roses in the middle of a Perth summer, by contrast, exposes them to intense sun and drying easterly winds just when their root systems are most vulnerable. If a mid‑season move is absolutely unavoidable, heavy pruning, excellent watering and some temporary shade will be essential to keep stress to a minimum.
