The right person for the job

Caring for your roses can be a full time or regular job. And it takes the right kind of person to deliver the right level of care to ensure your roses continue to grow throughout the year.

The best way to destroy your roses is to have someone come in saying they can cut back your roses or prune your roses and they really have no idea, or they believe it’s the same as mowing the lawn. Get in there and cut it back and they will never grow the same again.

Unfortunately, this is happening a lot. I have seen clients who have someone come in and do their lawn mowing on a regular basis and when they asked if they knew how to prune their roses they said yes. I can do that. In their mind they are thinking of the dollars because it is an extra job but in reality, they are great when it comes to lawn mowing but have no idea how to truly care for roses.

Before you ask your lawn mower man to prune roses, ask if he is really experienced in the care of roses. Ask if he knows how to prune the roses so they grow back. Ask him what his care plan looks like. Ask him, if he understands the different diseases that a rose may get or the pests that attack the roses and ask if he knows how to treat them or if he or she has a solution to that problem.

Better still call someone who cares for roses on a regular basis.

Recently I had someone call me after their lawn mower guy had botched the job because he didn’t know what he was doing. Now I must repair that botched job and my job for caring for them becomes harder and could potentially be more costly. The sad part is when someone doesn’t know what they are doing, those roses could die.

Think about this, you have a car that needs to be serviced. You take your car to an experience mechanic who knows your car, you wouldn’t take it to Joe Blow down the road who advertises that he can fix cars, but he really doesn’t have a clue and is working from home tinkering with his mate’s cars. You would go to a mechanic that works on your type of car all the time.
It’s the same with caring for your roses. Find someone who is experienced in roses and has been caring for roses for some years. They would know how to look after your roses and they would know how to prune and treat various different disease and have solutions for getting rid of pests.
