Rose leaves
Diseases, pests and other issues
If you see a problem with the leaves on your rose bush it is always best to call John from JGS Rose / JGS Group AU to come and take a look.
Your roses may have a disease, pests may have attached themselves or something might be happening in the soil.
Below are a few of the issues you may see on your roses:
Curly Leaves
Rose leaves that are curly or look like they are cupped could be an indication that there is an insect infiltration, a disease or the soil around your roses needs nutrients such as magnesium or calcium. If there is no sign of disease or insects then look at a problem with your soil.
Black Spot
As soon as you spot black spot on your roses and treating it as soon as you see it will help reduce the spread. Black spot on roses is caused by fungal pathogens and is specific to roses and normally attacks the foliage (the leaves) but can also attack the stems in some conditions.
Symptoms include irregular black spots on the leaves that may look feathery or fringed with yellow margins. If you don’t treat black spot, the leaves will be come yellow and fall and the stems will break. If left too long the rose will eventually die.
Powdery Mildew
The powdery mildew found on roses is a disease caused by the fungus Podosphaera pannosa. It is noticeable by the white growth that can affect all aerial parts of the plant. In most cases the first sign of the powdery mildew is a white powder that is seen on the new growth of the plant and bud stems. You may see some distortion of the leaves and flower heads.
If you find this on your roses please call John so that he can care for your roses.
To rid the roses of the mildew potassium bicarbonate similar to baking soda is used. It can eliminate the powdery mildew killing the spores quickly.
