Battling the Common Pests and Diseases Part 2

Summer Pests: Tiny Terrors

Perhaps the most significant pest problem in modern Perth gardens is the chilli thrip. These tiny insects can devastate new growth, causing leaves to curl and buds to become misshapen. Chilli thrip infestations require prompt, persistent action: targeted pruning, regular spraying with horticultural oils or insecticidal soaps, and maintaining a vigilant eye for re-infestation every 7-10 days.

Aphids—small, green or black sap-sucking insects—cluster on tender new shoots and buds. While they are a perennial problem, their numbers can explode during the warmer months. Aphids can be washed off with a firm spray of water, or controlled with organic sprays.

Other summer pests include mites, whitefly, and scale insects (all sap-suckers that can stress roses); as well as chewing pests such as caterpillars, earwigs, rose slugs, and garden weevils. Damage presents as perforated or skeletonized leaves, wilted growth, or general decline in plant vigour.

Prevention and Good Practice

Consistency is key in the Perth summer. Inspect your roses regularly and act quickly at the first sign of trouble. Ensure roses are mulched and watered at the base (not overhead) to limit fungal conditions. Dispose of infected material in the bin—not the compost. Encourage beneficial insects and use targeted, environmentally-friendly treatments when needed.

By following these tips and staying vigilant, your roses will reward you with a magnificent summer show—even as they weather Perth’s seasonal challenges. If you need further advice, please give me a call!
