Buying Roses for the First Time

What You Need to Be Aware Of

Buying your first roses is exciting, but it can also feel a bit overwhelming when you’re not sure what to choose. We look after many roses in Perth gardens and see what works well in our local conditions. That means we can help you avoid some common mistakes right from the start.

Before you buy, think about where the roses will go. Most roses need at least six hours of sun a day, good air flow and soil that drains well after watering or rain. If the spot is very shady, very hot or boggy, you may struggle to keep roses happy there without changes to the garden. Planning this first will save you time and money later.

Next, be realistic about maintenance. Some varieties are more disease‑resistant and forgiving than others, which is ideal if you are new to rose care. A mix of well-chosen bush, climbing or standard roses will be easier to manage than a random collection bought on impulse.

If you’re unsure, call me and I will visit and look at your garden before or after you buy. I can suggest the types of roses likely to suit your spaces, and once they’re planted, we can prune, feed and care for them through the seasons so you’re not left guessing what to do

If you need help when it comes to buying roses for your garden or for potting, please give me a call.
