Creating a Rose Garden

Our climate here in Perth is ideal for growing magnificent roses, with hot, dry summers and mild winters providing excellent conditions for these timeless beauties. Whether you’re a long-time gardener or just starting out, creating a rose garden in Perth will mean you need to understand or have some understanding of the soil here and the climate.

Soil Preparation

Perth’s sandy soil presents the biggest challenge for rose growers, as it drains quickly and struggles to retain moisture and nutrients. To prepare your rose beds, introduce copious amounts of organic matter such as compost, aged cow manure, or sheep manure, digging it through thoroughly to improve water retention. Roses prefer slightly acidic soil with a pH of around 6.5, so conduct a soil test before planting and amend accordingly. Prepare your beds at least 4-6 weeks before planting, digging the soil to a depth of 50cm and allow it to settle.

Location and Sunlight

Select a position that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight daily, with morning sun particularly beneficial. Good air circulation is crucial to prevent disease, so avoid overcrowded planting areas. Roses prefer their own dedicated beds rather than competing with other plants, making weed control essential.

Planting and Establishment

Winter and autumn are the ideal times for planting roses in Perth. For bare-rooted roses, soak them in water for 1-2 hours before planting. Position the graft union just above soil level, back fill with enriched soil, and water thoroughly. During their establishment, water 2-3 times weekly, with deep watering and mulching crucial during Perth’s hot, dry summers.

With proper preparation and care, your Perth rose garden will reward you with spectacular blooms year after year.
