A lot of people who have roses growing in their gardens understand why it is crucial to prune roses in the Winter months. But for many people out there they think that it is ok to do a heavy prune when the weather is not favourable and way too hot to give their roses the right type of rose care.
The reason it is important that you do a Winter prune is because the type of prune we do during the cooler months will help promote healthy growth in the spring.
I have found that when I give roses a hard prune when it is cooler, give them a few weeks and new growth often appears.
After pruning I generally spray them but with the unpredictable weather sometimes I have to wait as there is no point spraying the roses when it is raining. And I go back three weeks after the pruning with fertiliser. If I can’t get back in 3 weeks, I will leave the fertiliser with my client and provide instructions on how to feed the soil.
The best time to prune during winter is Late winter (July in Perth) because this is the ideal time. However, I have clients booked in through August and a small number in September.
